Emplacing & Socializing Architectural Designs

Description

This exercise asks students to begin by identifying a design that they find appealing for a building, public place, or park. This design, or the general design ideas and style of the architect, is then considered in a specific physical and social context. Students adapt the design to fit both.

Steps

1) Choose a master architect whose style you like. Research their theories, design style, and important buildings. Choose one of their designs to investigate further.

2) Look up social, demographic, and cultural information about a place that you are familiar with (your hometown, city where you currently live, etc.)

3) Look at a map of the town/city and locate a site where a building, park, or public plaza created by the architect could be placed. Make a decision about what function the designed space would serve (the program), and what you would want it to look like.

4) Do a quick sketch diagram and written description of how one of the architect’s buildings, parks, or public plazas could be placed at your selected site.

5)Write about what would have to be adapted and changed about that architect’s design to make it work for the social and spatial context.
